Backstage

With Olivia Harris

Born and raised in Sydney, Olivia began dancing various styles at the age of three. Olivia lived in Hawaii for two years, returning to Sydney at age 15 where she began her full-time ballet training at Tanya Pearson Academy for two years. In 2022 she was accepted into Level 6 at The Australian Ballet School and moved to Melbourne to complete her training. At The Australian Ballet School, Olivia was awarded the Level 6 and Level 7 Ballet Excellence Award, Graeme Murphy Contemporary Award and the 2023 scholarship from The Ballet Society NSW. In 2024, her graduate year, Olivia was seconded to The Australian Ballet to perform in their Sydney season of Études / Circle Electric.

Olivia is currently in her final year of training at The Australian Ballet School. Last Friday, at the school’s 60th Anniversary Alumni Event, she was announced as the recipient of The Ballet Society NSW Scholarship.

This month, we had the opportunity to go Backstage with Olivia. We look forward to working with her this year.

When and where did you start dancing?
Age 3, Brent Street

When did you join The Australian Ballet School and what is your favourite part of the school?
I joined in 2022 into Level 6. I love the well-rounded training that the school provides from ballet, contemporary, conditioning/strength training, pas de deux etc. I also love that we get to go on tour to Sydney each year.

What does your week look like?
In Level 8 we don’t have any academics, as we received our VCE in Level 7. I have various dance classes from 8:30am to about 5:15/6:00pm 5 days a week, and a half day on Saturday’s.

What do you love about dancing?
I love the expressive nature of the art and how each individual will interpret the music or story differently. It’s so interesting to witness each person’s artistic choices.

Where do you dream of working next year?
I would love to continue working with The Australian Ballet next year. While working with the company for a short time in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Études, I have developed such an admiration for the dancers of the company and all of the staff for their passion for creating meaningful art. I am also so intrigued by the idea of traveling overseas and experiencing different cultures and broadening my dance knowledge and experience. The uncertainty of what the future holds truly excites me!

Outside of dancing what do you enjoy doing for relaxation?
In my downtime I love to catch up with my friends and go outside. I love to walk, be out in nature, explore the city, and try new food spots. I also enjoy reading and relaxing at home.

Who or what inspires you?
It’s too hard to just pick one and what I love about ballet is that each dancer has something unique to offer, so there are many people I admire because of that. Some of mine include Yasmine Naghdi, Ines McIntosh, Isabella Boylston, Mayara Magri, and so many more.
