With Evie Ferris

Evie was born in Cairns, in Far North Queensland, and is of Aboriginal descent. She showed an interest in movement and music from a young age, and began dance and performing-arts classes at the age of four. In 2010 she moved to Melbourne to join The Australian Ballet School. During her time at the School she toured with The Dancers Company in 2014 and 2015 and was selected to participate in a student-exchange program, which took her to Canada in 2015. Late in the same year she joined The Australian Ballet and was cast in the company’s inaugural Storytime Ballet: The Sleeping Beauty season. Evie was promoted to coryphée in 2023.

We got the chance to go backstage with Evie, and ask her questions about all things ballet!

What advice would you give to aspiring young dancers?

My advice would be to not compare yourself to others as it’s such an individual journey. It’s often our uniqueness that sets us apart and allows us to shine and grow as artists. The most important thing to me is to be present and to love all parts of the process – this is where I find the most beautiful moments occur!

What do you like to do in your spare time?

Reading, meditation, yoga, pilates, spending time with family and friends and spending time at the beach on lovely, sunny days.

What’s you favourite thing about being involved in the wiggles?

Every day with the Wiggles brings something new for me! It’s such a warm environment filled with music, dance and laughter. I’ve loved exploring new ways to connect with families and hopefully inspire young children of all backgrounds through music and dance!

What’s the hardest part about juggling being a professional ballet dancer and a wiggle?

The hardest part about being a member of the Australian Ballet as well as a Wiggle is juggling time commitments and getting enough sleep! In some ways, the two positions work well together – I often record with The Wiggles in the mornings and then rehearse and perform with The Australian Ballet in the afternoons and evenings. But that means not much time for sleep! So I often have an afternoon nap between class/rehearsal and evening performance. It’s a demanding but incredibly rewarding experience to be part of these two artistic families. I hate having to miss out on performing with one or the other at times but I’m so fortunate and grateful that both organisations are accommodating and support me in pursuing both roles!

Dream ballet role?

I can never pick just one dream role! Every production and role offers something different. I find there’s so much growth and reward as an artist in exploring a variety of roles.
